The United Kingdom held the European Union's first carbon allowance auction this Wednesday.
Approximately four million permits were distributed with receipts of $80.9 million (£54 million) going to the treasury - not to be used in tackling climate change, but going to the treasury for general spending purposes.
Environmentalists were angered by this development and the UK government came under fire for undermining the fight against climate change.
